Description

Celebrate American artists by exploring self portraits, creating mobiles and imagining urban scenes inspired by American literature.

Event Details

In celebration of this Fourth of July week, we will introduce 20th century American artists inspiring students to create works in various media. Inspired by Norman Rockwell’s painted character-filled portraits, students will learn about the proportions of the face as they draw their own expressive portraits. Using recycled materials, students will create a small, delightful three-dimensional circus in the manner of Alexander Calder’ mobiles and sculptures. Students will learn about color theory as we create an urban scene inspired by African-American artists, Jacob Lawrence and Faith Ringgold, whose lively architectural paintings depict city life. Jamie Wyeth is an American realist who has created stunning animal portraits. This project will teach students the use of acrylic paints in creating their own work. Georgia O’Keefe was a painter whose many accomplishments included massive landscapes of the American desert. Our own block print landscape will reflect the principals of landscape drawing and give students insight into the process of printmaking.
